A cracking gig by an ever-changing New Order, still writing the songs that would make up their debut LP Movement. Making their debuts here (as far as we can tell) are Tiny Tim (soundcheck only) - which would evolve into Doubts Even Here once Hooky came up with the vocals and Steve sorted out the drum patterns, and Little Dead (eventually retitled Denial) both in the soundcheck and as the gig opener. The sound is stellar and the performance is excellent too. Love the little guitar bit Bernard carries into the Truth opening during the gig - it's only Hooky's bass entrance that gets the actual song going.

Debut performance of Doubts Even Here...amazing, and never bettered, in my humble opinion. Hooky's vocals are crystal clear on this one! There's a break at about 0:51 of this track, my suspicion was this may have been put there to watermark the recording. It has been left in, unedited, on both versions. Denial suffers from garbling at about 2:00, lasting for 20 seconds. That's from the tape copy.

There's a cut between Procession & Denial in the recording (all on one side of a C-45, though); strangely, after the cut the sound is much clearer for a short while, but by the time Denial starts there's no noticeable difference with the other tracks anymore.

This is by far the best-quality 1981 New Order audience recording, bar for perhaps Walthamstow or Stockholm. Worth it to hear Bernard's singing on Denial. And for the early version of Temptation, which is cut after about 10 minutes due to the master C90 running out. It sounds like the tape copy this was taken from was encoded with Dolby B NR, but I could be wrong about that. There's relatively little hiss.

After the one-off surprise gig at Utopia/Hal 4 in Rotterdam (1980-12-13), Dutch fans had to wait more than a year before they got another chance to see New Order, as the European tour of 1981 passed from France and Belgium to Scandinavia via a detour in Germany. In April 1982, the band made up for the delay with a 5-date trek across the country, kicking off in Rotterdam (again). This gig became known for the "Peter Hook Riot" that followed it, but you cannot tell from this very good audience recording: it just features the band's set, with no quotable quips and no encore (cope) but 40 minutes of tightly-performed music, the best of its kind at the time!

The penultimate show of the 5-date Dutch tour in April 1982, captured by at least two tapers. Tracks 1-3 are from an audience recording that starts out as a 7+ but improves to 8+ by Ceremony. From track 4 onwards, the source is a superior audience recording that unfortunately cuts in during the intro to Dreams Never End; presumably this taper arrived a little late at the venue? Anyway, our favourite taciturn band delivers (races through) another great performance, including an early rendition of Leave Me Alone and a 15-minute exploration of 'Cramp'. Check it out!

This is arguably New Order at their fucking best from a crucial phase in their career. The first taper was standing amidst a group of very enthusiastic and loud fans (lots of "BRAVO!" shouts, but thankfully only between songs), evidently close to either of the two PA stacks (during 'Chosen Time', you can actually make out the stereo PA mix: one moment the guitar sounds loud and clear, the other it's distant, mirroring the panning effect in evidence on the stereo SBD recording of the Milano gig). The other taper would seem to have been located more centrally, and his tape has less intrusive crowd noise.

New Order perform some of the FASTEST-ever renditions of some of their early classics, especially a blisteringly-fast version of "Ceremony" that has me picturing Steve Morris as just a frenetic blur behind the drums. A seminal, keystone gig (FM!) from relatively early in this brilliant band's career, remastered from the already-good version torrented last year on STG by lammah. The original seed was a bit too heavy on the top end and suffered from a bit of excess hiss as a result. I gently rolled off the top and low ends, fixed the pitch (it was a bit slow) and made other various minor improvements. This is now a terrific document of this era. If you pulled the original STG seed down, pull this too. You'll want to toss out the original - this is that much of an improvement.

Part of NIN's Euro tour opening for Guns 'n' Roses. As with most of the shows from this tour technical problems/ poor audiences led to short sets. This show in particular the technical problems start right away with vocals cutting out on Now I'm Nothing. Wish ends in a feedback laiden tantrum leading to Trent repeating over and over 'Fuck you' during Down in it.Trent's rant about how much he hates France during the opening of Head like a Hole closes the show in classic fashion.
