The Passage

The Passage

Years: 1978-83
Best song: "XOYO" and "Taboos"
Origin: Manchester, England
Driving force: Dick Witt's mastery of the English language is showcased via the Passage's innovative (ab)use(?) of synths and acoustic instruments. Witt's prior success as the percussionist in an acclaimed orchestra leads to obvious allusions to his classical arrangements and an orchestral majesty to the songs; but getting down to brass tacks, it's also just some great electro-pop!

The Plastics

Years - 1976 to 1981 (record debut in 1979 from Rough Trade)
Best Song - "Copy", "Top Secret Man"
Origin - formed in Harajyuku, Tokyo, JAPAN
Driving Force - They started as a party band and created their own fashionable and kitsch techno pop style. DEVO and B-52's are the bands which are said to have some similarities while I am not sure if they agree. Some of the band members like Talking Heads.

The Primitives

The Primitives

Years - 1985-1991
Best Song - Crash (released 2/88, reached #5 in the UK )
Origin - Coventry, England
Driving Force - The Primitives were one of best results of a British pop genre that first gained notoriety around 1986, in the wake of the Jesus and Mary Chain (but with a backwards nod to early Blondie). Characterized by self-consciously naive vocals and distorto-guitar backing tracks, they wore their influences on their sleeves; a love of melody and the Sixties (the Monkees, the Velvets and the Byrds), fast Ramones-influenced guitars, and the pop innocence of the Buzzcocks and Orange Juice. The band peaked early and disbanded in 1991.

Propaganda

Propaganda

Years - 1983-86 and 1989 and currently recording with OMD
Best Song - Dr. Mabuse (#27 in UK - 28/4/84)
Origin - Dusseldorf, Germany (moved to England to start career)
Driving Force - Deceit and propaganda are inseparable. A community in which the leader and his followers come together through propaganda - whatever the merits of it's context - is a community of lies. Truth itself becomes merely a means of enlisting support and is falsified in the very utterance. This is why genuine resistance knows no propaganda. Propaganda in misanthropic. It assumes that to say that policy ought to spring from mutual understanding is not a basic principle but conveniently empty phraseology.
